Should Animals Be Used for Scientific or Commercial Testing?

Along the history, animals have been used in scientific tests of drugs and surgeries before studies had been started with humans. This procedure isn’t used only for medical issues, during the space explorations, thousands of thousands animal were sent to space to test the body reactions in a place without gravity force. Nowadays, environmentalists look for the animal’s rights and it should be a long debate in the academic society.

            Proponents of animal argue their view point that research practice is impractical without tests in animal. The science’s evolution need understand the chemical reactions in living body to improve techniques and avoid put in risk human’s life. Ethical regulations were created to protect animals avoid mistreatment and drugs are used to minimize the impacts of pain and suffering.

            In another way, environmentalists protect the animals and require from the academic society other ways to test the drugs. These tests are cruel and inhumane and frequently show irrelevant results.

            Recently, a famous Brazilian research laboratory was invaded by environmentalists and dozens of dog beagles’ breed were freed. It was an invasion that resulted in years and years of researches threw in the garbage and a lot of animals with high potential to transmit diseases and low immunity in unknown homes. The laboratory closed the doors and dozens of scientists and workers were unemployed.

            The science evolution need be developed of some way. No matter the historical facts, nowadays the human life is better because some respectful scientists spent their lives to develop the life’s science. Certainly the research effects in the animals were minimized along the science advance. Maybe in future next animals shouldn’t be required or less required.

The dream to live in the U.S.

The U.S. are the biggest economy of the world and to live in this country is the hope for a better future for foreign people from different countries around the world. Nowadays, the American immigration system is failed and millions and millions of people have lived illegally. For the American government, it’s a big challenge because it’s hard to define what the government need to do to help this people, in another way, how provide this people to a temporary citizenship to provide them the right to contribute rightfully with the American economic. This kind of issue made the President Obama adopted some decisions about immigration illegals and border's protection to contain the magnitude of this problem.

The news “Obama: ‘You can come out the shadows”, by Jim Acosta and Stephen Collisson at CNN in November 21, 2014 talks about the government decision to difficult the entrance in the U.S for unauthorized outsides. It demonstrates a video recorded in Washington with Obama’s pronouncement about the question.

Obama shows his personal concern about this problem and tried to measure his words to avoid a national collapse between the American citizens and illegal immigrants. He clarified that the government don’t want deports millions and millions of people, it isn’t his characteristic. He used the statement: "If you meet the criteria, you can come out of the shadows and get right with the law. If you're a criminal, you'll be deported. If you plan to enter the U.S. illegally, your chances of getting caught and sent back just went up”.

In another part of his speech, he explain that the next actions aren’t so different of the law enforcement actions. All of the criminals should be deported as constantly happens, first of all it should be the action’s focus. The other focus should be legalizing temporarily immigrants that spent more than five years in the U.S to give them some rights and to possibility to participate actively of the American economy.

His actions are condemned by the politic opposition and probably the next President should make changes in this position about illegal immigration. How to make rights for illegal people is a big challenge for the current government and any action adopted can cause irreversible effects in society as all.

To conclude, something need be done but every action need be studied at maximum before be adopted. The government’s concern make sense and the first action to be done is the effective control of borders to avoid the increase of the problem. Others action should be adopted along the years to minimize the mass impact and guarantee a security country for all the people that living there and classify the U.S not just as a big economic nation, but as a country that acknowledge citizens’ rights.

Bipolar Disorder

This CNN news talks about Bipolar Disorder that is a mental illness that had been affected around 6 milions of Americans suffer from. It's very hard to know the exact number because in sometime people can't detect the diagnostic correct. Another names can describe the same illness as bipolar depression and manic depression.

A disfunction in the glandule amygdala, inside the brain, is responsible for the constantly alteration of humor. Bipolar Disorder, as the name means, represents two mental fases: depression and manic. In the depression state the patient don't desire to do nothing, don't have pleasure to do anything. The manic part of disease is the opposite of depression because the patient become very excited and want to do everything in the same time.

The diagnostic is a challenge and just can be prescripted by doctors. Sometimes the patients are followed by a psychologist in parallel with the clinical treatment. The treatment is based in drugs that try to establish the level of symptoms in long-term, but these drugs can cause other colateral effects as reduction of concentration capacity, sleeplessness, somnolence, and others. All of this symptoms need be informed to doctor to evaluate the correct medicine prescription. 

In my opinion, the mental illness can be classified as the century disease. The constant stress and pressure that people have been suffered in the last century changed the way lifes and it generates the evolution of this kind of disease. Depression, bipolar disorder, suicide, are new words constantly used in the news and day-by-day, more and more people look for treatment in psychiatrists and psychologists.

Did you get your flu shot?

The winter is coming and right now is the time to get the flu shot. The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sent a message for all Americans.

This year the rule for the vacination is different comparing to the last year. Almost 60% of the people with the influenza virus were people between 18 and 64 years, this age group definitely should be vaccinated this year.

Children between 2 and 8 years should get a modified flu shot called FluMist. It's a kind of spray vaccine that protects for four kinds of virus.

For pregnant women or for those expecting, the vaccine isn't recommended because it's a live vaccine.

In some other cases, the recommendation is to get three flu shots of vaccine. This kind of high-dose is the best protection against the flu.

The people over 65 years should get a combination vaccine to fight other diseases with pneumocal vaccines.

This protection is very effective for the flu virus and influenza virus. Another kind of illness like Enterovirus D68 can't be protected from this flu shot, said Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The symptoms are almost the same and sometimes the hospitals receive both kinds of clinical cases at the same time. This kind of virus can infect a person at the same time, but this isn't very common.

Offit says that more than 100 youngs died last season from influenza. He recommends to parents to pay attention to the season and the risks of their children's life. He looks for the solution to see the importance of the diseases and to control them by this vaccine. It's so important and so easy to avoid dangerous risks to these people lives.

The pharmacy industry is able to provide to the market approximately 150 milion doses of the flu vaccine. The time to get the vaccine is now!!

The Democracy in Brazil: Dilma Roussef was re-elected

     Today, October 26th, 2014 the world expected by the Brazilian's elections. After a big campaign between the current president Dilma Roussef and the oposition candidate Aécio Neves, Dilma Roussef was re-elected by more than 51% of the valid votes.

     The year 2013 was marked by a lot of manifestation publics when the electorate looked for responses for the corruption, security, education and health. The new generation haven't seen this kind of manifestation before. In 1990 other Brazilian's president, Fernando Collor de Melo had a impeachment and the main moviment was called “Painted Faces”.

     Nowadays the people are looking for the changes. The Work Party, whole Dilma Roussef represents, governs Brazil for the least 12 years and it's known by social politics, to reduce the poverty in Brazil and to increase others social's indicators.

     Otherwise, the Aécio Neves represents the economic change. He governed Minas Gerais for eight years and now tried to occupate the main Brazilian's chair.

     The election was marked for personal attacks between the candidates since the first round. In the second round it was increased and evidente. In each debate the both candidates had critics about the other party and the government that they represented. Never in the history the personal theme shows more evident than the economic and grow up theme.

     The response to this country corrupt and without hope for millions Brazilian happened today. The Brazil was divided in two areas, the north and poorest country with a lot of people that receive governiment incentives and the South, the richest contry with the most concentration of income in the country. So, the president Dilma Roussef was re-elected with the expressive votes in the north. In some states the president received more than 70% of the valid votes. In other way, the Aécio Neves won in the Sao Paulo state, the “economic heart”, with almost 65% of the votes.

     In the next four years the citizens will be the opportunity to analise the current government and decide about the next election in 2018. Now is the time to join the Brazil to the unique goal, grow up, eliminate the poverty, invest in education and in science and technology, invest in research and each year became this place in a good country to live and again the citizens start to say: “I'm proud to be Brazilian”.

Brazil Goes to the polls to the the second round for president

Last weekend Brazilians voted to choose the next president of Brazil. In the first round the current presidente Dilma Roussef received 41,59% of the votes and the second more voted candidate Aécio Neves received 33,55%. It indicates that the president of Brazil will choosed in the second round that will be happen in two weeks. The third place was Marina Silva with 21,21%.

Dilma Roussef is a politic from the Worker's Party and is the sucessor of the last president Luis Inácio Lula da Silva that occupied this chair for twice consecutives. This one party is known to look for reduce the social differences that means the big political problem in Brazil. The development of social programs for poor people helped millions of people to grow up economically and move to the middle class. In the same way millions of people don't live more in the extreme poverty.

In other way, Aecio Neves represents the PMDB Party and he's the sucessor of Fernando Henrique Cardoso that occuped the chair before Lula and created the actual Brazil's currency, The Real. The PMDB way to govern have focus in the economic aspects and sometimes the decisions haven't achieved the expected results. The campaign slogan is “Change Brazil” that in the last 12 years had in the Worker's Party government.

The both parties have presented proposals and made criticals the other government mainly about the corruption and economic variation. Actually economists evaluate Brazil as a country in recession because of the currency oscilation in comparing to the american dollar and the international interest to invest in Brazil.

In few days Brazil will decides the president for the next four years. It's a hard decision and everyone have to think about the Brasil's future and consequently the own future when use the right to vote. Brazil is one of the biggest country of the world and presents high potential to explore the natural resources and mainly human resources capable to transform this nation to the sustainable way. Now is time to think about the future!

The Ebola virus arrived in the U.S.A

Despite the control of borders, the Ebola virus arrived in the USA. The first patient diagnosed with Ebola in the U.S.A is Thomas Eric Duncan. He's a Liberian official and he has 42 years old.

This was his first trip to the U.S to visit some relatives especially his son and son mother. He traveled 8.000 miles from Morovia, the capital of Liberia, to Brussels (Belgium) and another flight to Washington and to Dallas.

He had contact with people infected because in his country he shared a home rented with a woman that died by disease Ebola, said the community lead. In September 15th he had contact with a seven month pregnant woman who fells on the street and couldn't go to the hospital by herself, so he carried in a taxi to the hospital. Probably in one of the both situations he was infected by the virus.

Willfred Smallwood, Duncan's half-brothers told that in Liberia is common the people help everyone like Duncan helped. His family believe that Duncan traveled to the U.S. without feeling symptoms of the disease. Liberia authorities asked him through a health questionnaire if he had contact with people infected or he touched patient's bodies who died by Ebola virus and he said NO.

After four days he was in the hospital Texas Health Presbyterian feeling symptoms and just told that he traveled from Africa. The hospital suspected that this information wasn't full and communicated the full medical team. Duncan's family crossed the U.S.A. from Arizona to North Caroline but they couldn't contact him because his health conditional is so serious. He just feel pain.

Now, the health officials are following about one hundred people that had contact or a brief contact with Duncan. He is isolated and receive all assistance necessary by the hospital. Americans doesn't need be afraid because the situation is on control.

Cultural differences between classes in the USA and Brazil

Today, I'll talk about some cultural differences between the classes in the USA and Brazil. I have already one month here in the USA and I just had english class in the WESL course but in this few days I could feel some differences that represents aspects of each culture and the format of the class represents a feature for the current culture.

When I arrived here the first impact in the class is the time to start. In Brazil the classes starts at 7am or 8am in some cases. It's happen because usually the students have to do the academic course and work in the same period of the life. In the USA the classes starts at 9 or 9:30am. I believe that the classes starts this time because of the intense winter that have temperatures below 0 graus Celsius and can reach like -20 degrees Celsius. Really it can make a difference in the student's day if is possible wake up and go to the class with the light sun. I believe it's more motivator.

Another difference that I seem is the american culture to starts the meetings every on-time. In the USA usually don't have any delay between the time of the meeting and the real time to starts. In Brazil I can't say the same because the often of delays are constantly and the people go to the meeting expecting by the delay. It's a kind of cultural difference that in resume make the people waste less time to go to a meeting and consequently this time can be used to do another activities during the day.

The duration of the class for me is the most important difference. While in the Brazil each class in the undergraduate course have about two hours of duration, in the USA each class have just 50 minutes and this time is só fruitful like the same classe in Brazil. It's happen because the class starts and ends in the programed time like I told in the last paragraph and the students can't use a mobile phone during the class. It's a confortable time to improve the knowledgement without access the social networks and another on-line programs.

During this time that I spent here I had a pleasure experience with this kind of teach method and I believe that doesn't exist a ideal format. I believe that exist a ideal format in common accord to the culture that the class is insert. The people can be adaptated to the culture in few time, but it's necessary practice and patience during this period.

Brazil lost the Volleyball Men's World to Poland

Today was a terrible day to the Brazilian's sport. The volleyball men team lost the title in the Poland to the national team. The both teams did a excellent championship but in the final just one can receive the title of the best world's team and this time was the Poland.

During the championship the Brazilian team lost just one play to the same team, Poland. This team eliminates one of the greatest teams like Russia with his giants and Italy in the semifinal. Brazil won the lasts three titles in 2002, 2006 and 2010 and now tried to get the fourth and consecutive title but the incredible red and white team obstructed this dream.

The championship happened in the Poland in Katowice and in the lasts plays the arena was completely full with more than eleven thousands of seats. The colors red and white occupied all of the places in the arena in a mix of screams and the word "Poland" the team won the play by 3x1 and gave to the Poland the second title after forty years. Since 1974 Poland didn't receives this title.

The Brazilian team won the first set, but in the another three the Poland team could show us the really volleyball. When the Brazilian team receives the silver medal, some players talk to the interviewer that the opaque shine of this medal should be like a school to the preparation to the Olympics Games that will happened in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil. The historic of the Brazilian team in the Olympics Games isn't so better than in the World championship because in the lasts two games the player received the silver medal too.

Despite of slaughtered two player received the title of the best players in them positions. In the interviews they told that the collective medal should be better to the Brazil to contributed to the expectation of the Brazilian people and to show to the world that we are the best volleyball of the world.

It's easy to see by the analyzes of the statistics because in the last years the Brazilian team was in all of the final of the mains championship of the world. So it's true! Brazil gets the best volleyball of the world, no matter the position in the podium or the quality of the medal, we have champions for ever.

The Winter is Coming! Are you prepared?

The winter in the USA is coming and some researches are talking about that this one will be the most strongest winter of the younger people could see.

Raoul Stockton published in the Health/Fitness, Science/Tech on September 6,2014 that the phenomenon meteorologic El Nino will be the responsible to the increase of the snowfall in entire the USA. In some places, the quantity of snow can be multiplied per 5 in comparison to the last winter, in others places the snow will to get records 20 times more than last winter as related Boris Scvediok, a doctor of global weather sciences, "record shattering snow storms across the board, affecting the entire United States."

Everybody should be prepared to this winter. The American public and mainly each one in his home with the winter emergency kit all right and the supply necessary ti this kind of stronger winter. Specialists show that the snow will cause the shortage and the price of the some products like milk and bread will increase substantially. The people are encourage to maintain a stock of this products in his cupboard and freeze. Bread can be freeze without prejudice the taste and other characteristics, as well the people can get the powered milk.

This will be my first winter with snow. The winter in Brazil is not so stronger, I felt temperatures no less than 8 degrees Celsius (46 degrees Fahrenheit). I need be prepared, so I asked some information to the advisor Marlene Forman and David Bell about the kind of winter clothes that I need get and where I can get this one.

I'm so excited for the winter, but I know that it will be an experience incredible with the positives and negatives points. So I expect to enjoy this moment like something that starts and the end is coming.

Is the World prepared to fight the Ebola virus?

Nowadays, Africa has been suffering the most epidemic of Ebola of the history. This virus is so dangerous and expand so fast by the air and the world are so worried about what can be happened in the next days, weeks, months and years. How to combat the Ebola proliferation? What is the cure to this disease? What will be the future of the poor Africa? These are questions that the world would like to answer quickly but no yet have response to it.

Alexandra Sifferlin in her article"Window to Stop Ebola Outbreak is "Closing Quickly", Official Warns" in the time.com talk about the increase of the people infected and the overwhelming of the doctors that works in the infected areas "The number of cases is so large, the epidemics so overwhelming and it requires an overwhelming response".

The World Health Organization and another groups like Doctors Without Borders are trying to help the countries infected but everybody that have contact with this areas are propitious to be infected too. However some doctors contracted this disease.

Another point that need be thought by the specialists is about the control of borders and the necessity of supplies to another citizens. It's indispensable to maintain the others citizens with the health and dignity while the scientists trying to find a cure to this disease. The people needs receive instructions about this virus and how to be protected. Some specifics rituals need be adapted to avoid the proliferation of the virus like the burial rituals.

So, it isn't a specific problem of the Africa continent. It's a problem that all of the world need be prepared and have to pay attention about what will be in the future of the world. Really this disease means a big challenge for the science and for the world. It's a big unknown and we can't predict how many time we need life with this virus between us.

My name is Angelo Tavares, I'm a Brazilian student of the Brazilian Program Science Without Borders that have been the opportunity to some citizens to study in another country to improve the foreign language and the knowledge in science and technology in some fields of study. My major is Management Engineering and I have professional experience in human resource area. I like to study about many areas, so I decided choose this course.

About what I like to do in my free time, I can say that I never like to stay alone. Every time I like to stay with my friends and my family doing anything. I like to visit my friends, go to the park to walk and run, play volleyball, go to the gym and others things related to healthcare. I like to spent time with these things that make me feel better.

I think that the U.S. is a good place to live. I have already visited her for twice but just to enjoy in the Disneyworld and in the Outlets in Florida. This is my first time in another city no related to tourism and my first impression is positive about it.

In Brazil I grow up in Sao Paulo that is one of the biggest cities of the world. Include this, Sao Paulo have big problems like socials differences that is the principal of the another problems like security, health, education, poverty, hungry and a lot of others problems that the differences between rich and poor people may show us. One of the big problems that in few days here I can feel better is about the traffic jam. In Sao Paulo you spent a lot of your free time inside the car practically stopped inside the car in a hot sun. Here I can do everything that I want inside the campus by walk. For me it's a great benefit to my health mental. Really the traffic jam makes me feel very stressed.

I haven't seen nothing about WIU and Macomb before. In the Brazilian Program I just choose the country and the government, with the representative organization in the U.S. IIE, chose the University to me. When I arrived here I was very surprised with the structure of the University and the campus at all.

My goals in this one year and a half that I will spent here is make me fluent in English and learn the maximum that I can about the American culture. Of course that learn about my major in American view is included in this goals.

After my time here, when I comeback to Brazil I want finally my undergraduate and continue my master in engineering to find a good job in a multinational company. These are my academics and professionals goals in medium time. In a personal view I wanna get married and take care of my little pets and help my parents wherever they need.

This is a small presentation about myself to you know more information about me. I'm so glad to stay here and I hope improve my English in this course.
